In Quanjiao County, Huanan, there was the new bride Ding, originally a woman of the Ding clan in Danyang.
其姑嚴酷，[her] [mother-in-law] [cruel] [unfeeling]
使役有程，[make] [slave] [have] [schedule]
不如限者，[unlike] [restrained person]
仍便笞捶不可堪。[still][continue][beat][stick][not][can][bear]
Her mother-in-law was cruel and unfeeling woman who made Ding slave over many chores all day long, and since she was not a restrained person, she beat Ding with a stick. But Ding could not bear it.
九月九日，[9th month] [9th day]
乃自經死。[on that day] [self] [hang] [die]
On the 9th day of the 9th month, she hanged herself and died.
遂有靈向，[subsquently] [there was] [spirits] [sounds/rumours]
聞於民間。 [heard] [among] [the people]
Subsequently, there were rumors of ghosts among the people.
發言於巫祝曰：[send out] [words] [through] [a medium] [invoke] [say]
「念人家婦女，[remember] [people] [families] [younger sisters-in-law] [women]
作息不倦，[work] [rest] [do not] [tire]
使避九月九日， [make] [avoid] [9/9]
勿用作事。」[do not] [use] [work] [things]
She sent out a message through a medium's invocation, saying: "Remember those women who are the younger sisters-in-laws. They do not tire. Let them avoid the 9th day of the 9th month, and do not employ them in work or projects."
見形，[appeared] [a shape]
著縹衣，[wear] [light] [clothing]
戴青蓋，[wear on head] [dark green-blue] [hat]
從一婢，[follow] [a] [maid]
至牛渚津，[to] [Niuzhu] [Ford]
求渡。[ask] [cross]
There appeared a shape wearing light clothing and a dark green hat, following a maid to the Niuzhu Ford, and asked to cross it.
有兩男子，[there were] [two] [men]
共乘船捕魚，[together] [ride] [boat] [catch] [fish]
仍呼求載。[still] [call] [ask] [carry]
There were two men riding together on a boat catching fish, and she continued to ask them to carry her across.
兩男子笑共調弄之。[two] [men] [laugh] [together] [tease] [humiliate] [her]
The two men laughed, and teased and humiliated her.
言：「聽我為婦，當相渡也。」[say] [listen] [me] [as] [wife] [then I will] [mutually with you] [cross] [it is that]
They said: "It's just that if you obey us as our wife, then we can cross together."
丁嫗曰：「謂汝是佳人，而無所知。[Ding] [lady] [said] [it is said that] [you] [are] [good] [person] [thus] [there is no] [what is] [known]
The Lady Ding said: "If it is said that you are good people, then I do not know what is good."
汝是人，[you] [are] [person]
當使汝入泥死；[then] [make] [you] [enter] [the mud] [to die]
是鬼，[are ghost]
使汝入水。」[make] [you] [enter] [the water]
If you are a person, then I will make you enter the mud to die, and if you are a ghost I will make you enter the water (I don't understand how this is a threat.)
便卻入草中。[then] [retreat] [enter] [grasses] [into]
Then she retreated into the grasses.
須臾，[suddenly]
有一老翁，[there was] [an] [old man]
乘船，[ride] [boat]
載葦。[carry] [reeds]
Suddenly there was an old man riding a boat carrying reeds.
嫗從索渡。[the lady] [followed] [asking to be] [taken across]
The lady followed him asking to be taken across.
翁曰：「船上無裝，[the old man] [said] [boat] [on] [has no] [covering]
豈可露渡？[how] [could] [open air] [cross]
恐不中載耳。」[afraid] [not] [in] [carry] [that is all]

The old man said: "There is no covering on the boat. How could you cross in the open air? I'm afraid I will not carry you onboard, and that is final."

The old man thus let go of half his reeds, arranged a place for Ding in the cover-less boat, and immediately crossed the river.

語翁曰：[spoke to] [the old man] [saying]
「吾是鬼神，[I] [am] [a god]
非人也。[I am not] [a person/human] [am]
They arrived at the south bank, and when Ding faced the old man at departure, she spoke to him, saying: "I am a god, not a human.
自能得過，[self] [can] [get] [across]
然宜使民間粗相聞知。[in this manner] [fittingly] [make] [the people] [roughly] [mutually] [hear] [know]
I can get across the river myself, but this is roughly how I make people hear as well as know of me."
翁之厚意，[the old man] ['s] [generous] [intention]
出葦相渡，[letting go] [reeds] [mutually] [cross]
深有慚感，[deeply] [have] [shame] [feeling]
當有以相謝者。[will] [have] [take] [mutual] [gratitude]

If you, old man, quickly return back across the river, it is certainly the case that you will have what you see."
翁曰：「恐燥濕不至，何敢蒙謝。」[old man] [afraid] [wet] [dry] [is not] [arrive] [how] [dare] [accept] [thanks]
The old man said: "I'm afraid that will not do. How can I dare accept your thanks given the circumstances?"
翁還西岸，見兩男子覆水中。[old man] [returned] [west] [shore] [saw] [two] [men] [flipped] [water] [in]
The old man returned to the west shore to see two men faced down in the water.
進前數里，[proceed] [forth] [several] [li/feet]
有魚千數，[there were] [fish] [thousand] [several]
跳躍水邊，[jumping] [leaping] [water] [side]
風吹至岸上。[wind] [blow] [reach] [shore] [onto]
He proceeded forth several feet where there were several thousand fish jumping and leaping above the water's surface, and the wind blew them onto the shore.
翁遂棄葦，[the old man] [subsequently] [released] [his reeds]
載魚以歸。[loaded up] [the fish] [take] [return home]
The old man subsequently released his reeds, loaded up the fish and took them to return home.
於是丁嫗遂還丹陽。[at] [this] [Ding] [Lady] [subsequently] [return] [Danyang]
At this the Lady Ding then returned to Danyang.
江南人皆呼為丁姑。[Jiangnan] [person] [in all cases] [call] [to be] [Ding] [Aunt]
In all cases, the people of the Yangzi River call her Aunt Ding.
九月九日，不用作事，咸以為息日也。[9/9] [do not] [do] [things] [all] [take] [to be] [rest] [day] [it is the case that]
On the 9th day of the 9th month, they do not do things and everyone considers it to be a day of rest.
Now those who are there make sacrifices to Aunt Ding.
